The Baltic Sea Call to Action News Letters

Below you will find a short summery of our monthly news letters. Click on the red button to view the actual news letter. The newsletters from August 2025 are in english, but older ones will be in swedish only until we find time to translate them.

  • During 2025, we have influenced through meetings with many EU and national politicians. They now want to see restrictions on the fishing of herring in the Baltic Sea.
  • This has likely contributed to Sweden saying no to the expanded quota proposal that other Baltic Sea countries agreed to.

  • Our opinion piece this summer about a preparedness quota was a contribution to the debate on fishing this autumn.

  • We have had six opinion pieces published in various daily newspapers during the year.

  • We were invited to give our views in a consultation on fishing quotas at the Ministry of Rural Affairs and Infrastructure in September.

  • As we are not satisfied with the quota decision for 2026, we are planning new activities ahead of next year’s negotiations.

  • In ICES advice there is though also a recommendation to instead decrease the quotas to avoid the risk of a  collapse of the herring stocks.
  • To as fast as possible reduce the industrial fishery, we now work to find out what  Sweden can do, and also to try to raise awareness in the other countries around the Baltic sea.

  • ICES prognosis for 2026 will soon be here and the question is if the quotas again will be increased. 
  • There are many other countries that have a far more cautious  fisheries management than Sweden.


  • We have been on the exhibition "Allt för sjön" (Everything for the ocean).
  • We have discussed with a number of scientists, and will now try to influence decision makers. The important messages is that the fishery must be substantially reduced.
  • Our swedish EU parliamentarian have incommon invited the new Eu commissonar to the Marine centre in Simrishamn, Sweden, to show how the current fisheries management is not sufficient to generate a sustainable ecosystem in the Baltic sea.
  • The CEO for Norrsundet's harbour has now stopped unloading of fishfrom the large industrial trawlers.- "Uppdrag granskning" has discussed the problem. Today, the 9:th of April was the following program sent: Uppdrag granskning - Fisken vi ärvde - very interesting.

  • It is now important to also get other countries surrounding the Baltic sea involved. The same critical view on the fisheries are not as prevalent in some of these other countries as it is in Sweden. 
  • - - If you have any contacts in these countries we would be happy to let us know. 
  • To our surprise we have discovered that the herring from the Gulf of Bothnia is MSC-certified. We are trying to investigate how this has been able to happen.
  • There is now a UNIQUE possibility to give ones point of views about the EU's fishing policies.

- In total 91 different associations and companies now support us, as well as quite a number of privat persons. Together there is now more than 130 000 persons that support our appeal.

- We have now talked to many different scientists as well as local fishermen.

- Thus, we have moved to now also talk to representatives for the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea, ICES, that are responsible for sampling and calculations.

- Unfortunately it seems like many factors are not taken into account in the decision of the fishing quotas. 

- Scientists have among other things shown that there are a number of genetically distinct different populations of herring, which e.g. spawn at different times, which is not taken into account in the decisions of fishing quotas. 

- The herring has decreased in both size and how old they can get. But in the mission that the EU-commission has given to ICES there is no action to take into account neither the size nor the age distribution.

- Similarily to investigate the effects of the fishing on the ecosystem is missing, and missing is also to take into account different environmental issues and its effects on the herring populations.

- We are happy to strengthen our working group, and welcome Birgitta Seeman.

- As usual there are also links to current and interesting reading.

- In total 83 different associations and companies now support us, as well as 100s privat persons.

- We are now intensively on way to gather more facts about the current management ot the herring stock in the Baltic sea, as well as reading up in the scientific knowledge.

- We also interviews scientists and other persons with deep knowledge about the Baltic sea about the herring, and the processes that is the base for the decision of the fishing quotas that it se each october.

- We also find and interview professional fishermen.

- We continue to establish networks also outside Sweden.

- With this knowlegde our goal it to  develop strategies to influence the management of the herring stocks, and the decision of the quotas.

- In total 63 different associations and companies now support us, as well as more than 70 privat persons .

- Help us getting more involved. the goal is at least 100 organisations.

- We also want to get in contact on the grassroots level in the other Baltic sea countries, and especially Finland that has the largest fisheries.

- Sweden will this year be the presidency of the BALTFISH organization, which gather the countries around the Baltic sea to discuss questions relatied to the fisheries. Sweden by this ought to be able to influence!
